At one time, Elm trees were among the most common trees in America. But due to the Dutch Elm disease it was nearly pushed to extinction. This makes it very rare to find in sawmills or lumberyards. Soundwise it pairs very well with light, warm-toned woods like cedar. So this dulcimer has a bookmatched Aromatic Red Cedar top with bookmatched Elm back and sides as well as the scroll and fretboard. The 26" scale length includes 18 nickel silver frets including a 1½, 6½, 8½ and 13½ frets for a full two octave range on each string. The Grover Sta-Tite tuners have a 14:1 gear ratio and lifetime manufacturer's warranty. The inlays are Mother-of-Pearl and the nut and bridge are bone. Matching strap buttons are already installed and it is setup to use either loop or ball end strings. This dulcimer has a nice warm tone with great clarity and volume and you will certainly not be disappointed in the sound.

If you are familar with old instrments from the 1800's and early 1900's you know that many, if not most, were black. This includes many early dulcimers. So this dulcimer is made to look like an antique from that era, although with modern enhancements to make it more playable. In fact, I first began making this style of dulcimer for people involved in historical reenactments.  However, it is not painted but turned black by using an old process that has been around since the middle ages (which is too much to explain here). But suffice it to say that it actually turns the wood black instead of simply coloring it.
The top, back, fretboard and flat headstock are Walnut and the sides are Cherry. As always, it has a 26" scale and 18 nickel silver frets including a 1½, 6½, 8½ and 13½ frets for a full two octave range on each string and Mother-Of-Pearl inlays. Both nut and bridge are Ebony. The Grover Sta-Tite tuners have a 14:1 gear ratio and lifetime manufacturer's warranty. Strap buttons are already installed and it is setup to use either loop or ball end strings. So if you want a warm sound and an antique look... this might be your dulcimer.

NOTE: This dulcimer is TK O'Brien brand and not made by Ron Gibson Mountain Dulcimers.

Unfortunatly, many people buy an expensive dulcimer intending to learn to play, but for various reasons discover that they either don't have the time or interest. They are then stuck with a very expensive "wall hanging" or have to sell the dulcimer at a big loss. This dulcimer is an entry level instrument that doesn't break the bank, but is perfectly functional for learning or as a second dulcimer for travel.
Anyone familar with dulcimers has heard of TK O'Brien brand dulcimers. TK has released this new version with a shorter scale length combined with the legendary low action of TK dulcimers making this a very easy to play dulcimer.
It features a Spruce top with Walnut body and fretboard. The scale length is 25½ " with 18 nickel silver frets including a 6½ fret and a zero fret. The floating bridge allows for intonation adjustments when changing tunings or string gauges and the fretboard is marked for easy bridge location. It comes with a free instructional book, noter and pick. With dulcimer prices skyrocketing these days, this is a very affordable introduction to the mountain dulcimer and the small scale combined with low action make it ideal for younger players or those who find it difficult to play other dulcimers.
