When I first began building dulcimers around 41 years ago, I only made 3-string dulcimers.  Then 4-string duclimers became normal and you rarely saw a newly built 3-string.   However, over the last few years I've noticed a dramatic increase in the number of people playing 3-strings or simply removing one of the doubled melody strings. There is a certain "mojo" to a 3- string that makes them very enjoyable to play and frankly, I don't notice a great loss of sound by not having the doubled melody.

This dulcimer has a bookmatched aromatic red Cedar top with bookmatched Curly Maple back and sides. This combination of woods produces a distinctive sound that is very  clear in tone with great resonance. Over time the Curly Maple will darken to a blonde-creamy color that really compliments the white streaks in the Cedar. The layered fretboard has 16 nickel silver frets (including a 6½, and 13½ frets) with a full two octave range and abalone inlaid position markers. The Grover 14:1 gear ratio Sta-Tite tuners offer excellent tuning precision with a lifetime manufacturer's warranty.
This dulcimer also has a "decoupled fretboard." This is an old time technique where a gap is left between the end of the fretboard and the upper portion of the scroll.  This frees the fretboard, which is also part of the soundboard on a dulcimer to vibrate more freely and therefore produce better resonance and volume.  There are numerous opinions on whether this works... but all I can say is this is a very resonant dulcimer and very loud - more than I would normally expect.  In any case, just a very nice dulcimer and an excellent value.

This dulcimer has very low string action and in conjunction with the 26" scale lenght makes it an excellent choice for a beginner or anyone who finds it physically difficult to play a stringed instrument.  The beautiful bookmatched Juniper top looks great with the bookmatched Pennsylvania Cherry back and sides. This combination of woods produces a very clean, clear tone with great balance and warmth.  The Cherry  fretboard has 16 nickel silver frets (including a 6½, and 13½ frets) with a full two octave range and abalone inlaid position markers. This dulcimer has a bookmatched Pecan top and to the best of my knowledge is one of only five Pecan top dulcimers in existence based on the fact that I no of no other builder who has used this wood before. The back and sides are bookmatched Walnut. The fretboard has 16 nickel silver frets (including a 6½, and 13½ frets) with a full two octave range and Mother-of-Pearl inlaid position markers. The Grover 14:1 gear ratio Sta-Tite tuning keys feature the classic "Butter Bean" knobs and come with a lifetime manufacturer's warranty.
Since I have no further access to Pecan wood this will be the "last of its kind." So I included an internal pickup with matching strap buttons so it can be plugged into any amplifier, soundboard or effects units using a standard 1/4" guitar style chord.

This dulcimer is constructed entirely of black Walnut. It has one unusual feature, which is the fretboard is "decoupled" from the headstock, which is intended to free up the top and fretboard to vibrate more freely. Whether this actually works is the source of some debate, although I did immediately notice a unique more open, resonant tone to this dulcimer. However, it may be only because of the nice, darkly colored Walnut.  In any case, this is very good sounding dulcimer.
As always, the top, back and sides are bookmached. The fretboard has 16 nickel silver frets (including a 6½, and 13½ frets) with a full two octave range and Mother-of-Pearl inlaid position markers.  The Grover 14:1 gear ratio Sta-Tite tuning keys provide quick, precise tuning with a lifetime manufacturer's warranty and it includes matching strap buttons already installed. It is setup to use either loop or ball end strings. Just a very good all around dulcimer at a great price!!!

Some people call this dulcimer style a Tennessee Music Box, a church dulcimer or just a box dulcimer. So I always tell people if they buy it they can call it whatever they like.

This dulcimer has a bookmatched Ambrosia Maple top with bookmatched Walnut back and sides. The Walnut has a deep chocolate brown coloration that offers a nice compliment to the Maple top. The gold Grover Sta-tite tuners have a 14:1 gear ratio and classic "Butter Bean" knobs with a full manufacturer's lifetime warranty. The fretboard is layered Walnut with an Ambrosia Maple center section with black Abalone inlays, an easy to play 24" scale length and 16 nickel silver frets including a 6½ & 13½ fret with a full two octave range. The string height is set to the traditional “dime under the first fret and nickel under the 7th fret height.”

Also included is an internal piezo pickup with matching gold hardware (input jack and strap button), which allows you to plug into an amplifier, effects pedal, a soundboard or electronic tuner using a standard guitar cable.

I frequently hear from customers that the dulcimer they purchased is much more beauritful than expected and the pictures do not do the dulcimers justice. That will certainly be the case here. This dulcimer has a very nicely colored bookmatched Cherry top, with bookmatched Walnut back and sides.  The layered fretboard is Walnut with a Cherry center section and has 16 nickel silver frets (including a 6½, and 13½ frets) with a full two octave range and Mother-of-Pearl position markers. The tuning keys are Gold Grover Sta-Tites with a 14:1 gear ratio and lifetime manufacturer's warranty and matching strap buttons are already installed. The string action is low, which makes the dulcimer very easy to play.   A great choice for both a beginner or experienced player. This dulcimer can use either loop end or ball end strings. The sound is very balanced with a nice tone, good volume and resonance. You simply will not find a better dulcimer for this price.

TK O'Brien Mountain Dulcimer Strings

Price $7.50 (sold in two sets of strings per pack)

Your new TK O'Brien dulcimer comes with nearly everything you need except replacement strings. I've found that new players frequently break strings from over-tightening until they get used to the tuning process.  Also, strings just wear out and sound dull after awhile and need replaced. So don't let broken strings keep you from playing your dulcimer - always keep extra strings on hand!!!

Note: Mixolydian strings are for DAD tuning only while Ionian Plus strings can be tuned to both DAD and DAA.  However, the Mixolydian strings will be easier to play if you only play in DAD.
