Sorry - this dulcimer is sold!

This dulcimer is another of what I call a "player's dulcimer." The intonation is excellent for playing in DAD and the string action (height above the frets) is setup nearly perfect.  The top is bookmatched maple, which produces a clean, clear balanced tone. The back and sides are bookmatched walnut.  The layered walnut/maple fretboard has 16 nickel silver frets (including a 6½, and 13½ frets) with a full two octave range and black abalone inlaid position markers. While most dulcimers in this price range use cheap Chinese "covered tuners" this dulcimer features smooth Grover 14:1 gear ratio Sta-Tite tuning keys that provide quick, precise tuning with a lifetime manufacturer's warranty.
If you want a beautiful high quality instrument that is easy to play and sounds great then this is an excellent choice.

Some people call this dulcimer style a Tennessee Music Box, a church dulcimer or just a box dulcimer. So I always tell people if they buy it they can call it whatever they like.

This dulcimer has a bookmatched Ambrosia Maple top with bookmatched Walnut back and sides. The Walnut has a deep chocolate brown coloration that offers a nice compliment to the Maple top. The gold Grover Sta-tite tuners have a 14:1 gear ratio and classic "Butter Bean" knobs with a full manufacturer's lifetime warranty. The fretboard is layered Walnut with an Ambrosia Maple center section with black Abalone inlays, an easy to play 24" scale length and 16 nickel silver frets including a 6½ & 13½ fret with a full two octave range. The string height is set to the traditional “dime under the first fret and nickel under the 7th fret height.”

Also included is an internal piezo pickup with matching gold hardware (input jack and strap button), which allows you to plug into an amplifier, effects pedal, a soundboard or electronic tuner using a standard guitar cable.

The tuning keys are gold Grover Sta-Tites with a 14:1 gear ratio and lifetime manufacturer's warranty and matching gold strap buttons are already installed. The internal pickup offers the option of plugging into an amp, effects pedals, an electronic tuner or mixing console.  The string pins allow the use of either loop end or ball end strings. A nice dulcimer for someone looking for a warm sound and traditional looks but with the option to "go electric."

Sorry - This dulcimer is sold!

I usually only make flathead style dulcimers for custom orders. But lately I've been getting increasing demand for these so thought I would build a few for stock. This is a very nice example with a rare bookmatched Birdseye Maple top and bookmatched Walnut back and sides. The layered Walnut fretboard has 16 nickel silver frets (including a 6½, and 13½ frets) with a full two octave range and Mother-of-Pearl position markers . The gold Grover 14:1 gear ratio Sta-Tite tuning keys are set in a headstock with matching Birdseye Maple overlay.  This dulcimer also features an internal piezo pickup with gold hardware, including strap buttons. Very nice dulcimer at an excellent price.

This Extended Range™ dulcimer has a big sound with great sustain (listen how long the the sound continues to carry in the first soundclip above). The top is bookmatched Ambrosia Maple. The stripes on the wood are created by enzymes from the Ambrosia beetle which leaves small pinholes in the wood. The sides are bookmatched Walnut and the bookmatched Walnut back has the same pinholes and striping created by the Ambrosia beetles although the dark striping does not show up as much in the dark colored Walnut.
The fretboard is Ambrosia Maple with a Walnut overlay, 18 nickel silver frets (including a 1½. 6½, 8½ and 13½ frets) with a full two octave range and Mother-of-Pearl position markers. The action is set to the traditional dime under the 1st fret and nickel under the 7th fret height for easy playability and it features a bone nut and bridge for great tone and excellent sustain. The Grover Sta-Tite14:1 gear ratio tuners provide quick, precise tuning with a lifetime manufacturer's warranty and the internal piezo pickup allows you to plug into any amp or effects device using a standard guitar cable.

TK O'Brien Mountain Dulcimer Strings

Price $7.50 (sold in two sets of strings per pack)

Your new TK O'Brien dulcimer comes with nearly everything you need except replacement strings. I've found that new players frequently break strings from over-tightening until they get used to the tuning process.  Also, strings just wear out and sound dull after awhile and need replaced. So don't let broken strings keep you from playing your dulcimer - always keep extra strings on hand!!!

Note: Mixolydian strings are for DAD tuning only while Ionian Plus strings can be tuned to both DAD and DAA.  However, the Mixolydian strings will be easier to play if you only play in DAD.
