I really like this dulcimer. Not only does it look great but it has fantastic sustain and just a very nice, clear and balanced tone. The string action is set to the traditional dime under the 1st fret and nickel under the 7th fret height and it has a great feel and at least for me, perfect action.  The top is Juniper and the body Curly Maple. As always, 16 nickel silver frets, colorful Abalone fretboard inlays in the fretboard and gold Grover Sta-tite tuners with matching strap buttons already installed. If you want a great dulcimer that is suitable for everyone from beginner to experienced player I sincerely don't think you will find  a better one than this in this price range - just a really nice all around dulcimer.

This dulcimer is a new concept in dulcimers that I've been meaning to build for a long time.  I'm not sure I invented it, but I have never seen or heard one like it.  Basically, it is a combination standard dulcimer and baritone dulcimer - or as I call it "extended range."  The first four stings are tuned as normal with the 5th string being tuned to a low A.
From a music theory standpoint this gives you a low 5th below the standard D bass string. From a sound and playing standpoint it extends the range of the dulcimer. Although I'm not sure I want to sell this one yet, I am now offering the extended range as a new option.

The dulcimer can also include string pins on both sides so that the low bass string can be set aside for normal playing, or the two melody strings set aside to be played as a baritone (just tune bass D up to E).
The bass response and sustain are remarkable. I've been thinking of making this dulcimer for years and am really happy with how it turned out. The only drawback I see is the wider fretboard does not allow most capos to be used.

A Cedar top is great way to impart a warm tone to any acoustic instrument, which is why it is often used in fine classical guitars.  It has the same affect on dulcimers as can be heard with this dulcimer.

Tulip Poplar was a very common wood used in early dulcimers and I have always liked the balanced sound it produces.  The yellowish-blond coloration also adds a nice contrast to the deep brown of the Walnut.
