The soundfiles below only provide a slight indication of the sound characteristics of a Gibson dulcimer. While most builders purposely tend to emphasize the high, bright, nasal tone of the dulcimer, the dulcimers I build have a fuller voice and balance the bass, mid range and treble frequencies equally. This is solely a matter of preference. Unfortunately, the sound you hear will only be as good as the speakers you use and the digital sound of the Internet enhances the higher frequencies and decreases mid range and bass response - so these soundfiles are at best a poor representation of how your dulcimer will sound.  Another important characteristic of sound that cannot be transmitted on the Internet is volume.  While I routinely hear compliments about how well my dulcimers project, there is no way to convey this through a digital soundfile.

This 6-string Barbara Allen dulcimer has a curly maple top and walnut body. It almost sounds like two dulcimers playing in harmony.
